Snow Toboggan
Snow Toboggan
Tough Physics Question, need help on hw plz?

1. An old car is traveling down a long, straight, dry road at 25.0 m/s when the driver slams on the brakes, locking the wheels. The car comes to a complete stop after sliding 215 m in a straight line. If the car has a mass of 755 kg, what is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the tires and the road?

2. A rescue worker pulls an injured skier lying on a toboggan (with a combined mass of 127 kg) across flat snow at a constant speed. A 2.33 m rope is attached to the toboggan at ground level, and the rescuer holds the rope taut at shoulder level. If the rescuer's shoulders are 1.65 m above the ground, and the tension in the rope is 148 N, what is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the toboggan and the snow?
plz include the answer

1.
v^2 = u^2 - 2as
=> 0 = (25)^2 - 2a * 215
=> a = 1.45 m/s^2 (a = deceleration)

Frictional force
μmg = ma
=> μ = a/g = 1.45/9.8 = 0.15

2.
Vertical component of tension in rope = 148 * (1.65/2.33) N = 104.8 N
If R = reactive force from the surface, balancing vertical forces
R + 104.8 = mg = (127) * (9.8)
=> R = 1139.8 N
As the velocity is constant,
Frictional force = horizontal component of tension in the rope
=> μR = (127) * [√(2.33)^2 - (1.65)^2] / 2.33 = 89.7
=> μ = 89.7/1139.8
= 0.0787.

As I could not find my error in the above answer pointed out by you in your email, I asked help from Mr. Anil Bakshi who holds #1 in Physics from India. He found my error as under.

Letter to Mr. Bakshi
Subject: Re: Can you find my error?

From: anil bakshi
you plugged in mass in place of tension (148)
Your answer
μR = (127) * [√(2.33)^2 - (1.65)^2] / 2.33 = 89.7
=> μ = 89.7/1139.8
= 0.0787.
----------------------
It should be
=> μR = 148 * [√(2.33)^2 - (1.65)^2] / 2.33 = 104.5
=> μ = 104.5/1139.8
= 0.0917.

EDIT:
Thank you, Anil.

Snow activities other than skiing?

I'm taking my bf to "see" some snow for the weekend. We're thinking of staying at Jindabyne, NSW. We're not planning on skiing or snowboarding due to very limited budget.

What other activities are there? What about tobogganing?
Any ideas?

You could try XC skiing - bushwalking on skis. Wilderness Sports and Paddy Pallin in Jindabyne will hire gear. It is a lot cheaper than lift served sliding.

If there is enough snow Perisher has a tube park, where you slide down a track on an inner tube sort of thing.

Tobogganning is downright dangerous. There is nothing between the base of your spine and a hard place.

At Thredbo you can ride the chair to the top and fool around. Dress warm.

    Thank you for changing the end of the vid. The previous music was twice as loud as the rest and, honestly, quite annoying.
