I love how america media and movies only show heavy black women. When in fact everyone is heavy in the US. I'm the thinnest nurse on my shift and am black. At work at this moment, that's why I was thinking about it. Just an observation.
What's a good beginner bellydance dvd that will help me get in shape?
I'm hoping to try and get in better shape and have heard that bellydancing is a great way to do so. I'm not able to get to any classes and I am unable to afford them (college student). So a DVD would be a better alternative for me. I want something that is good for fitness, but teaches traditional belly dancing. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks!
You are right! Middle eastern dance is an artistic expressive enjoyable way to maintain your physical fitness. There are many many instructional disks out there. Go to your library and look in the dance and performing arts section. Check out every book, dvd, vhs on Bellydance! Look at all of them. These collections are usually beginner level. Some are better than others. But at least you can preview some before purchase.
I found that some disks I adore, are scorned by others. It is a matter of personal choice. What will really make the difference in your fitness and your dancing is your regular consistant practice.
I strongly urge you to try out a local class or two whenever you can. It is way more fun and you can connect with other classmates and maybe practice together outside of class.
A teacher will also be there to answer your questions and give feedback on your technique and posture (very very important, especially as a beginner)
If you go to amazon.com there are many reviews on instructional videos written by teachers and students alike. I have written several myself.
Lastly, If money's tight...do visit your local library where you might try before you buy those dvd's!
In answer to your request for a "good instructional video that will get you into shape" I have to say that I have not found a jazzercize/aerobics/gym style bellydance video that I would recommend.
In terms of content and quality: I really like the tribal basics series by Fat Chance Bellydance. This is just my personal opinion and I know others might argue with me. But there's my two cents:)
